Discourse vs. Bettermode

Choosing the right platform for your community

THE KEY DIFFERENCE

Community platform

vs.

Branded portal

Discourse

Choose Discourse if...

You need a stable, fully owned community platform that will scale with you for years: predictable pricing that doesn't penalize growth, regular updates, and the option to self-host or move your data at any time.

Bettermode

Choose Bettermode if...

You want a polished, modern-looking branded portal, you're comfortable with member-based pricing, and you don't expect to grow past your tier's seat limits anytime soon.

Bottom line

Bettermode is a hosted community product priced by member count and moderator seat. Discourse is a platform you control. Whether you self-host or use our managed hosting, your data is always yours, the price doesn't climb every time your community grows, and nothing essential is locked behind a paid add-on.

TL;DR Comparison Table

Your Priority
Discourse Choose Discourse if…
Choose Bettermode if… Choose Bettermode if…
Pricing Model You want flat pricing that doesn't penalize growth or charge extra for every collaborator. Per-member and per-seat pricing fits your projected community size and budget.
Feature Access You want a platform where the essentials—API, SSO, moderation, analytics—are included, not unbundled. Paying for SSO, API, OAuth, and other essentials as separate plan tiers or add-ons works for you.
Hosting Options You want the option to self-host, with the same features and full control. Vendor-hosted SaaS works for your team.
Open Source You value an open-source platform with no vendor lock-in. Proprietary code is fine for your situation.
Platform Stability You want a platform with a 10+ year track record and a stable, predictable trajectory. Bettermode's roadmap and pace of pricing changes match your expectations.
SEO & Discoverability You want community content indexed under your domain and surfaced cleanly by search engines and AI tools. The current SEO and indexing capabilities meet your needs.
Migration & Exit You want a documented exit plan, full backups on demand, and no fees to access your own data. You're not concerned about portability. Ask Bettermode about export options before signing.
Compliance You also want ISO 27001 certification and the option to self-host for stricter data residency requirements. SOC 2 alone meets your requirements.

We built Discourse for communities that need to keep running through whatever the next decade brings. It's open source, actively maintained, and designed so that your community data belongs to you, not to us. Every discussion becomes a permanent, searchable part of your knowledge base. If your community is a long-term investment, you should have an exit plan. Discourse provides that.

When evaluating any community platform, it's worth examining the vendor's pricing trajectory, what's bundled vs. unbundled, and what happens to your data if you decide to leave. Those questions matter more than feature checklists, especially for platforms that have changed pricing models multiple times.

The Key Difference

Discourse

Discourse is a community platform you own. Whether you self-host or use our managed hosting, your data is always yours, your code is open source, and your community isn't dependent on any single vendor's pricing decisions. Discussion, knowledge-building, and member-driven engagement are the product.

Bettermode

Bettermode (formerly Tribe.so) is a hosted community portal that's polished, modern, and built primarily for customer communities. It's a closed-source, vendor-hosted platform with pricing based on member count, collaborator seats, and a long list of paid add-ons. Many features that other platforms bundle as standard—API access, OAuth, SAML, custom email—are gated to higher tiers or sold separately.

Pricing comparison

Discourse

Discourse

Self-Hosted:

  • Free, open-source software.
  • You pay for your own hosting (typically $10–$100/month).
  • Every feature, complete control. No member caps. No collaborator caps.

Managed Hosting:

  • Free: $0
  • Starter: $20/month
  • Pro: $100/month
  • Business: $500/month
  • Enterprise: Custom pricing

Flat pricing with no per-member or per-seat fees. Chat is included on all plans. Core features — AI, API, moderation, analytics — are included from day one.

Bettermode

Bettermode

Bettermode's published plans:

  • Starter: $399/month ($4,788/year). Up to 10,000 members, 5 collaborators, custom domain, basic analytics, core apps. No API, no SSO, no AI features.
  • Growth: $1,500/month ($18,000/year). Up to 25,000 members, 10 collaborators, AI and federated search, branding removal, sender email customization, API and webhooks, OAuth 2.0, basic activity log.
  • Premium: Contact sales for pricing. Up to 100,000 members (overages apply), 20 collaborators (overages apply), SOC 2/JWT/SAML, 90-day audit log, dedicated CSM, 99.9% uptime SLA, custom billing, security and legal review.

A few cost dynamics to keep in mind:

  • Member overages. On Premium, overages apply beyond 100,000 members. For a growing community, this means your bill keeps climbing as you succeed.
  • Add-ons. Many Bettermode customers find they need add-ons that are priced separately (additional staff seats, additional storage, email credits, bandwidth boost, additional spaces, translation locales, CMS upgrade), with monthly fees stacking on top of the base plan.
  • Free plan retired. Bettermode's free plan was discontinued in March 2026.
  • Enterprise deals. Real-world pricing for enterprise communities on Bettermode has been reported in the $25,000+ per year range, depending on member count, modules, and add-ons.

Cost reality

Bettermode's pricing scales with the size of your community and the size of your team. A successful community that doubles in members, or adds collaborators, sees its bill climb. Discourse's pricing is tied to the plan, not the audience. Your community can grow to a million members on the same Business plan that supported it at ten thousand.

When Discourse is the Better Choice

When you don't want pricing that scales with success

Bettermode's per-member and per-seat caps mean a thriving community pushes you up the pricing ladder. Discourse's flat plans don't penalize growth.

When you want everything in the box

Discourse includes the API, moderation tools, analytics, and chat on every plan. With Bettermode, several of those are tier-locked or sold as add-ons that stack onto the monthly bill.

When platform stability and longevity matter

Discourse has run the same open-source codebase for over 10 years, with regular updates. Because it's open source, your community's future doesn't depend on any single company's pricing decisions or strategic shifts.

When you need self-hosting or full data residency

Bettermode is hosted on their infrastructure only. Discourse offers a true self-hosted option with the same features as managed hosting, giving you full control over where your data lives.

When you want a documented exit plan

Discourse's open-source code, full data backups on demand, and self-hosted option mean you can leave at any time. With a closed-source tool, your exit plan is whatever export options the vendor decides to provide.

When your community is more than a support portal

Bettermode's positioning is heavily focused on customer communities. Discourse works for that use case and many others—open-source projects, member associations, enterprise teams, brand communities, education, and public discussion. The same platform supports them all.

When AI-era discoverability matters

Discourse content is indexed cleanly under your domain and surfaced by search engines and AI-powered tools. Public community content stays discoverable, building your authority over time.

A Community is More Than a Forum

Discourse includes everything you'd need to run a rich, multi-channel community in a single platform.

Organized, asynchronous discussions

The core of Discourse, built for knowledge-building and member-driven support.

Real-time chat

Integrated chat channels for quick questions and everyday conversation.

Community events

Schedule and manage events directly within your community.

Powerful group messaging

Private, threaded messages for teams and members.

One platform, one login

A single profile and notification system for everything your community does.

This matters most when you're comparing platforms that bundle similar features differently. With Discourse, you don't have to map out which plan tier unlocks which capability or which features require monthly add-ons. The platform is the platform, whether you self-host or use our managed hosting.

Migration From Bettermode

We've run migrations for some of the largest communities on the web, including sites with 8M+ users, 2M+ topics, and 1TB+ of data. Our team handles member records, discussion history, knowledge articles, and content structure with minimal disruption to your community.

Customers who've moved to Discourse consistently cite a few things: the relief of pricing that doesn't climb with their member count, the difference that open-source longevity makes for long-running communities, and the speed of a platform built specifically for community discussion.

If you're evaluating a migration, the best place to start is a conversation about your specific Bettermode setup. Member count, current plan, integrations, and custom theming all factor in. We've seen it all.

Ready to Move Forward?

Moving to Discourse is a decision to own your community's infrastructure outright, with a platform that puts you in control.
